Castillo San Cristóbal, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Castillo San Cristóbal is a fortress located in Old San Juan, a district within the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico that is home to many of the city’s most historic sites.
Construction of the fort was started by the Spanish in 1634 and completed in 1790.
It was constructed by the Spanish to protect the territory from land assaults from the east.
Situated on the Caribbean shore, the massive structure is comprised of multiple levels, a series of lengthy tunnels, and numerous look out points from which to keep watch out into the Caribbean and over the island.
It is located within walking distance of El Capitolio, which houses the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico, and Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a fortress located at the northwestern tip of Old San Juan.
